The months
Spring runs roughly March through May:
- March: still cool and changeable — the tail of winter more than true spring, but prices and crowds are low.
- April: the city wakes up. Milder days, blossoms arriving, outdoor life returning. A lovely time to visit.
- May: arguably the sweet spot — warm but not hot, everything open, long days, and the full outdoor calendar back.
Layers are still your friend; spring weather swings day to day.
Cherry blossoms and the bloom
Spring's signature sight is the cherry blossom (sakura) season, typically peaking around April. The city's parks and gardens put on a show — the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's cherry trees are the most famous display, and Central Park and other green spaces bloom too. Timing shifts year to year with the weather, so check current bloom updates close to your trip.
The city comes back outdoors
After winter, spring is when New York returns to the street and the park:
- Outdoor sightseeing is comfortable again — long walks, the bridges, the parks. A Central Park walking tour or a hop-on-hop-off bus both shine in mild weather.
- Baseball returns. The MLB season opens in spring — an early-season game is a classic way to mark the city waking up.
- Concert tour season ramps up as artists hit the road; see what's on at the concerts hub.
Why spring works
Mild weather, blossoms, fewer crowds than summer, lower prices than peak season, and the full outdoor city back online. If you want comfortable sightseeing without summer's heat or winter's cold, spring is a strong pick.
