When the season runs
The MLS regular season runs roughly late February or early March through October, with the playoffs continuing into late autumn. That's a long warm-weather window, which makes soccer one of the easiest sports to slot into a spring, summer, or early-fall trip.
- March – May: early season, mild weather, smaller crowds, easy tickets.
- June – August: peak summer. Warm evenings, the fullest atmosphere, and the best time for a soccer night out.
- September – October: the playoff push, with rising stakes if the team is in contention.
The rivalries that matter
A regular-season match is enjoyable, but the rivalry games are the ones worth planning around:
- The Hudson River Derby — NYCFC vs the New York Red Bulls — is the marquee local rivalry and the most charged atmosphere of the season. See our derby guide.
- Marquee visiting clubs and weekend matches draw the biggest, liveliest crowds.
If your dates line up with a derby, prioritize it. Otherwise, a warm-evening weekend match is a reliably good night.
How to plan a soccer weekend
Soccer pairs well with a wider New York weekend because matches are affordable and the season overlaps peak tourist months:
- Build around an evening kickoff and keep the day free for sightseeing.
- Bundle the rest of the trip. A multi-attraction pass like the New York CityPASS covers the daytime sights and pairs neatly with an evening match, spreading good value across a weekend.
- Dress for the evening weather — matches are outdoors and seasonal.
